Another day, another band outside the KFC on the corner of Coldharbour Lane. But not our usual Saturday treat of reggae gospel, firstly because it’s Thursday and secondly, there’s decidedly less reggae and a lot more jazz. This is the second time My Brixton has spotted United Vibrations busking on the streets of Brixton with their homemade soundsystem-on-wheels. But this time they had a friend in tow:

How could we resist? Half Simon Phoenix from Demolition Man, half Blade [although by my calculations that’s a 100% Wesley Snipes ], we had to go in for a chat. And this is what we found out from the lovely Kareem:

United Vibes are promoting 12Tone’s fundraising gig tonight at Club Medussa and all profits are going towards building a self-sufficient housing co-op that Kareem’s dad Dave is building in south London. The line-up itself is reason enough to want to go, let alone the knowledge that it’s all for a good cause. Along with UV, space poppers The InvisibleSpeakers Corner QuartetSpeech Debelle and spoken word artist David J will be performing. We’re particularly excited to see Speech again after we saw her at her album launch party for Speech Therapy a couple weeks ago. A south London girl, her take on hip hop is a throwback to the jazzier days of the early 90s reminding us a tad of Bahamadia or even Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets. It sounds like a great night, so we better see you down there.
