What the … ?

Yes! We are all pretty excited about it: Windrush Square and Tate Gardens are going to be merged into a new and improved pedestrian square. Pretty pleased as well that they’re keeping the name ‘Windrush’ because as you may know, it was to commemorate the arrival of the steamship Empire Windrush that carried Caribbean men and women to Britain after World War II.
The face of Brixton is about to change for ever, they are even reshuffling our beloved Ritzy:

Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked, if you want to find out more about the history of Empire Windrush or about the Council‘s plans for the square, just follow the links.
What has been attracting my attention lately is these…

I mean what is the deal with all those empty bread bags? Any idea? No, seriously I’d like to know, so if you’ve got a clue, share it!

Before I disclose any information, I should mention that I have been asked not to advertise this place too much as its regulars favour the lack of publicity. However, at MyBrixton, we simply cannot keep anything to ourselves!
On a corner of Kellett Road, tucked away from the town center but within minutes of the tube station, stands the Effra Hall Tavern, more commonly known as the Effra. Heard of it?
In a nutshell, it’s a charming old fashioned pub that offers resonably priced drinks, Caribbean food as well as live ska and jazz music on Thursday and Sunday nights!
I won’t say anymore, just go check it out and tell us what you think. And if anyone asks, remember, you did not hear it from me…

So if you don’t know where the Satay Bar is by now – just look out for some funky wall paintings at the begining of Coldharbour Lane.

Food time!

I could probably write about every Brixton eatery you can think of , but my Japanese side often takes me to:
Photobucket

It’s a small well run family business located on Atlantic road. The food is fresh and delicious + reasonable bill at the end. Few years back, I got to chat with the owner ,who is actually from Colombia and had never been to Japan at the time , but can cook proper Japanese food (did I mention that my grandma is Japanese??!) Nowadays it is mainly run by his wife – her cooking is as good as, not to say better.

A great place to eat in the neighbourhood!

Scratch ‘n’ Sniff

Who else thinks the popcorn stand at the front of the Reliance Arcade smells so good that they’re tempted to lick the glass?

Anyone?
